My friend, Michelle, and I love orange cosmos flowers. But her local gardening centre told her there was no point waiting to stealthily pounce on her neighbour's pretty patch to collect the vibrant flowers' seeds.
The orange flowers are hybrids. Cosmos are usually light pink, dark pink, and white. And when the orange flowers die, their seeds revert back to the original colours. In fact, most hybrid flowers, like other-than-blue morning glories, do this sneaky metamorphosis. A fitting response to our sneaky modifications.
The plant world accepts our tampering for only one season. Isn't that incredible?
It's also rather thought-provoking given the scientific community's momentum to modify genes and DNA.
